Anu Kumar's Immigration Challenges ~ A Story of Resilience & Success
In this inspiring conversation, we sit down with Anu Kumar, Computer Studies Instructor at Langara College, to hear her journey from Delhi to Vancouver.
Anu Kumar is a Microsoft Certified Trainer and professional instructor at Langara College, Vancouver, where she teaches Business Computer Applications. With more than 30 years of experience in the field of computers, she has taught everything from programming languages and databases to applied computer applications. Alongside her teaching career, Anu has worked as a freelancer, developing custom database applications and managing data migrations for companies. She holds a Master’s degree in Education from India and a Provincial Instructor Diploma from VCC, British Columbia.
In her Conversations3X podcast episode, Anu shares her inspiring journey of moving from Delhi to Vancouver in 2010 and building her career in Canada. She describes the challenges of credential evaluations, navigating uncertain job prospects, and how she eventually found her first teaching opportunity at Langara College. Her story is one of perseverance, focus, and resilience, demonstrating how newcomers can create new pathways with determination and open-mindedness.
Guided by the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, Anu emphasizes that effort must be wholehearted and focused on learning rather than results. “If your mind is fixed only on grades, it hinders true knowledge,” she reminds her students. She draws strength from her favorite book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, often turning to it during low moments to reset her mindset and refocus her energy.
In the podcast, she also shares thoughtful reflections on the struggles faced by international students—from emotional and financial pressures to social isolation - and the importance of support systems, counseling, and institutional resources. She encourages students to remain open to diversity, adapt to change, and seek help when needed.
Beyond teaching, Anu is also passionate about sustainability. She actively incorporates eco-friendly practices into her life, such as reducing waste, minimizing plastic use, and lowering her carbon footprint through small, consistent steps.
Her message for newcomers, students, and lifelong learners alike is clear:
“Have a clear goal, persevere with focus, and trust your inner strength. When you put in wholehearted effort, the right opportunities will follow.”
